Recruiting Report: Brett Martin (2019)
Local Division II and III programs are working to ensure that Massillon Washington 6’4” guard/wing Brett Martin (2019) doesn’t have to venture too far from his hometown for college.
Martin told Prep Hoops that the nearby trio of colleges — Walsh, Malone, and Mount Union — are keeping tabs on him going into July. On top of that, he’s also in contact with Lake Erie.
Martin, who actually isn’t concerned with school location much at all, spoke highly of Walsh during the interview. The shooter has visited Walsh, along with Lake Erie, Cleveland State, and Youngstown State. His experiences with various programs has helped Martin figure out what he’s looking for in a college experience.
“It’s all about relationships to me,” Martin said. “I’m not going to go to a school because they haven’t been doing good the last couple years. If I have a good relationship with the coaches, and I like the campus and the academics, it will all take care of itself.”
Although he’s yet to receive a scholarship offer, Martin is confident they’re on the way if he continues playing well.
“Walsh came to about eight or nine of my school season games and Lake Erie to a few of them. But they told me that they think I’m a D-I prospect … So they didn’t want to offer me now and then have me get a D-I offer. So they just want to wait until after the summer to see how everything plays out,” Martin explained.
Martin, who plays for the NEO Shooting Stars, is getting some run in with Washington in the meantime. They went to Mount Union yesterday and are heading to Lake Erie later in June. It will be his third straight year as a team captain, so the senior leadership responsibilities are nothing new.
“I’m not a natural leader at all. It took some getting used to,” Martin said. “I’m a vocal guy now, but I’ve always been lead by example. But now I got example and I have to get on my guys when I need to. And I expect them to get on me when they need to.”
On paper, there’s no doubt that Martin will also lead Washington in scoring next season. His 6’8” wingspan allows him to shoot over defenders in the mid-range. He can also create separation with craft.
“I think I can shoot the ball pretty well … on the perimeter and mid-range, and I’ve been working on my fadeaway a lot,” Martin said.
He’s also working on other areas of his game that will help him create space.
“I’m working on ball-handling because the new coaching staff that we have in wants me to bring the ball up a lot … So I’m working on my ball-handling, vocal leadership, and getting bigger in the weight room,” Martin said.
Any added muscle will help him with his back to the basket. Although Martin is a perimeter wing, he likes to post-up against his matchup and shoot turn-around jumpers within 15 feet of the basket.
In the classroom, he carries a 3.0 GPA. Martin scored a 16 on his first ACT attempt, a score he isn’t satisfied with.
