Recruiting Report: Allen Strothers (2021)
There’s always an advantage to your father being a coach growing up, especially when you’re a point guard, and Menchville lead guard Allen Strothers has benefited tremendously from it. As just a freshman, the lead guard is playing up on Boo Williams 16U in the EYBL and is leading his team with much more poise than the average guard his age.
In the Southern JamFest a few weeks ago, Boo fought all the way back in the Final Four and the championship game, trailing in both of them, and Strothers was a big reason why. He controlled the tempo, created shots and hit the game winner as time expired in the championship.
“We did a great job of fighting until the end and keeping the turnovers down in the second half in both of the last two games,” Strothers said.
As a point guard, Strothers is more of the old school throwback than the new school scoring lead guard. He can break defenders down off the bounce, he’s athletic and he defends the basketball, but most of all he makes other players around him better.
“I like to break down defenders off the bounce and create help so I can kick out to shooters,” he said. “If the shot is there I’ll take it but I’d much rather help get my team buckets.”
As far as what he believes he needs to do moving forward, all he’s focused on is winning basketball games and getting better.
“I know I need to work on my second move and get better, but I’m just worried about winning championships moving forward.”
Strothers may be new to the high school scene, but he’s already getting noticed by college coaches. He took a recent visit to NC State and holds offers from ODU, Hampton, Norfolk State and Kent State.
As for why college coaches should recruit him, it all has to do with his poise and ability to make others better.
“I’m a great point guard. I’m unselfish, I look to get others involved and I love to win games.”
While he still has to continue to improve in different areas, Strothers has a chance to be a very special guard in the 757 moving forward.
