Prospect Spotlight: Doc Self (2019)
Coach Caserio always has Gilbert play at an extremely high level. With this next season seeing them move to 5A with a lot of their talent returning from last year’s 16 win team, it is safe to say that Gilbert has high expectations.
One of the key prospects on the team is 5’11 2019 PG Doc Self. Self has recently earned accolades for his solid on ball defense as the key for the success of Gilbert’s pack line defense.
Self is a knockdown shooter from deep who can also get into the paint. He is extremely skilled and does all of the little things that make teams win games.
Doc Self College Interest
At this point, Self does not have any college offers. He has received interest from “Eastern Oregon University and some from UCSD”.
In addition to being a solid prospect who does a lot of things really well on the court, he has done all of the little things off of the court. Self has a “4.0 GPA”. His academics mixed with his on the court abilities should aid him greatly by the end of his high school career.
As far as what he is looking for in a school, he stated, “A place where I can obtain a degree in cinematography and business while playing basketball at the highest division possible.”
Unlike a lot of prospects, Self has kept doors open for himself due to his academics. He values education and noted that he would bring the college a student who has strong work ethic and takes his work in the classroom seriously.
On the court, he would bring the program a “vocal leader” who “demands a level of excellence from myself and my teammates.”
Doc Self College Projection
Self is smooth. He never looks rushed and makes good decisions with the basketball. He can shoot the basketball from anywhere on the floor at a high level, and he puts his teammates in good spots.
In addition to his mistake free offensive prowess, he is as tough of an on-ball defender as there is in the state. He can pick up the ball full court and apply constant pressure that makes it hard for the opposing team to get to their spots offensively.
While he does need to improve his strength, he has a number of skills that translate well to the next level. He is a floor general who is slightly undersized.
At this point, the best level for Self to have an immediate impact is mid to high NCAA Division-II or NAIA Division-I.
