Prospect Spotlight: Daniel Santana (2019 Wilson HS)
AAU basketball provides a number of opportunities for those who choose to participate in the spring and summer. For Daniel Santana, an aggressive 6-foot, 175-pound guard from Wilson High School in Tacoma, it’s an opportunity to not only get seen by college coaches but also a chance to expand on his game for next season. He’s been satisfied so far but continues to strive for more.
“The spring went really good but I felt like I could do better,” Santana said. “I did really good with my scoring and I felt like I rebounded a lot more. I felt like I helped out and everything’s been good.”
Santana has used his time with the Washington Supreme program to work on improving his game – and in a very specific area. “I’ve been working on my outside shot,” Santana said. “Every knows I can drive, but I need to get my three and my mid-range down and then I’ll be unstoppable.”
As far as getting seen by college programs on the circuit, Santana notes that his college recruitment is still developing but that he’s heard from a number of Division II and Division III schools, including Pacific Lutheran. This type of interest seems to fit what he’s looking for in a program. “I really don’t want to go to a big school but kind of want to go somewhere where I can be the guy,” Santana said. “Whatever feels right to me, whatever feels like family.”
Since things are still very much in development, Santana is focused on his school ball in June and then it will be back on the circuit in July. “The rest of the summer, I really want to get stronger and hit the weights,” Santana said. “I want to become a better three-point shooter but still be slasher that I am.”
