Prospect Profile: Payton Richardson (2020 Western Mennonite HS/Hoop Salem 16U)
Payton Richardson got a taste of the big time this spring. The lanky 6-foot-4, 170-pound rising junior from Western Mennonite played with the Rose City Rebels 16U squad and got a chance to face some big-time competition. But while Richardson will continue getting to play against tough teams, he’ll be doing so for the Hoop Salem 16U squad the rest of the AAU season.
“It was cool to go to the big tournaments and play in the EYBL but for me personally it’s a better fit to switch,” Richardson said. “It’s closer to my house so it’s easier for my parents.”
One of Richardson’s first tournaments with Hoop Salem 16U was at The Hoop Memorial Day Classic. Playing mostly inside, he battled hard for rebounds, utilizing his length and athleticism. He also was able to finish plays inside. Richardson has been trying to expand his game and hone his skills on the perimeter. “I need to work on my ball-handling and confidence in my shot,” Richardson said. “I’ve got to keep taking them.”
While it’s early, Richardson has started to receive some college interest. It’s no surprise that Linn-Benton has been in contact but Oregon State has also been watching. It is definitely early when it comes to college recruitment for the potential-laden rising junior.
“I’m just looking to have fun,” Richardson said. “I want to win some tournaments and get looked at more personally. Hopefully get my name more out there for my upperclassman years.”
Richardson currently ranks as the #6 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
