Prospect Profile: Jonah Downey (2019 Silverton HS/Hoop Salem 17U)
This spring and summer is all about change for Jonah Downey. The athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound guard recently switched from the Hoop Salem Select squad to the main 17U team and he’s also prepping to play at Silverton next fall. It’s a jump up to a higher level but Downey is ready for the challenge.
If his play at The Hoop Memorial Day Classic was any indication, Downey is ready. He seamlessly adjusted to his new teammates, showing off some great quickness with the ball and the ability to finish drives near the rim. Downey shot the ball well from distance as well.
While scoring clearly comes easily for Downey he is working on diversifying his game. “I’ve been getting better at being a true point guard,” Downey said. “I’ve been passing and playing defense well and I’m really learning how to attack.”
With the promotion to the top Hoop Salem squad, Downey is hoping to achieve some goals. “I’m looking to see if I can get some offers this summer,” Downey said. “I’d like to get a good D-II school or even a small D-I. I do want to go where I can play right away and make an impact. I don’t want to wait.”
What Downey won’t have to wait for is a good final experience on the AAU circuit. “It’s going to be fun with this team,” Downey said. “I think we can win some big tournaments.”
Downey currently ranks as the #29 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
