Prospect Profile: Jack Chlumak (2020 Newberg HS/Team Fly 16U)
Jack Chlumak has the big picture in mind. The talented 6-foot-3, 170-pound point guard from Newberg is playing high level AAU basketball with Team Fly’s 16U squad, and as he has been having fun and working on his game, he’s also looking at ways he can bring what he’s been learning back to his Newberg High School team.
“My offense has been pretty slow so it’s been good to play up-tempo and hopefully learn some things to take back to Newberg,” Chlumak said. “I’ve been getting better attacking the hoop and getting more efficient in sharing the ball with my teammates. I’ve got a lot of talented guys on this team so it’s been fun playing with them.
Chlumak’s game stood out recently at both the Oregon High Academic Showcase and The Hoop Memorial Day Classic. He efficiently used his size to get to the basket where he either finished plays or dished it out to the open man. He has a good feel for the game but also knows he needs to improve on being a threat from the perimeter. “I’ve been working on my shot as I’m trying to get that consistent,” Chlumak said. “But besides that, I’m working on pretty much everything.”
It’s early when it comes to college recruitment for Chlumak as he’s just getting his name out there locally. But he’s hopeful that he’ll get the opportunity to spread his wings at the next level. “I really want to get out of Oregon – I’d like get down to California or somewhere like that,” Chlumak said. “I don’t really care where I play, I just want to play college basketball. I’m pretty high academic so I just want a place that will challenge me academically and basketball wise.”
For now Chlumak is enjoying the time he has with Team Fly and has some high expectations come July. “I think we have the ability to win a championship,” Chlumak said. “We’ve got some new kids and I think we should be able to win some championships the rest of this summer.”
