Prospect Profile: Chase McClain (2019 Mountain View HS/Team Fly Williams)
A team’s point guard play can often determine their success. Chase McClain is well aware of this and that’s why the steady 6-foot-2, 180-pound floor leader from Mountain View High School has been working hard on his game this AAU season with Team Fly, preparing himself for his senior season while working hard on getting noticed by college programs.
“It’s been pretty exciting traveling to different states and playing against different competition,” McClain said. “It’s been a fun ride for me.”
McClain has filled in at both backcourt spots alongside Isaac Lange. With Lange recently out due to injury, he got to fill in full-time at the point for Team Fly at The Hoop Memorial Day Classic and he performed well. He took care of the ball, found the open man, and hit some clutch jumpers himself. McClain also surprised a bit with his rebounding ability, especially on the defensive end. It’s all part of the process of improvement for him.
“I’m basically been trying to get people open and make plays for others,” McClain said. “I’ve been working to get more space off the dribble and start using my left hand more. I’m trying to get my assists up and improve my assist-to-turnover ratio and just trying to be an overall solid point guard.”
McClain’s college recruitment is relatively quiet right now, but he’s hoping to hear from some schools that will offer him the right fit. “First of all academics but then the basketball program and then what they’re all about,” McClain said. “I’m open to anything really, anywhere I can get a ball in my hands and let me play.”
A big July may just help McClain achieve his goals. “I’d like to get an offer, maybe even four or five,” McClain said. “But mainly I just want to become a better basketball player. I’m really focused right now and getting my game better.”
McClain currently ranks as the #24 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
