Landry-Walker Summer League Scouting Reports (June 5, Part 1): Video
Landry-Walker’s Summer League annually hosts the best of the best in the month of June and this year is no different. Prep Hoops was on-hand for part of the first day of action and here’s a look at a few names to monitor with scores from the day.
Crescent City 41, St. Augustine 29
Sophie B. Wright 60, Crescent City 52
Madison Prep 45, New Iberia 39
New Iberia 51, Landry-Walker 48
Check out Part 2 here, which focuses on Madison Prep, New Iberia and Landry-Walker.
Crescent City
Byron Joshua — 2020 5’10” PG
Joshua has looked great this summer with Louisiana Supreme and the same was true Tuesday with Crescent City. He’s a floor general of the highest order that can both score and distribute at a high level and his ball handling and ability to change speeds is also elite. It was nearly impossible for defenders to stay in front of him in both of Crescent City’s games and Joshua can also knock down the long ball with consistency. Division I programs would be knocking down his door if he was four inches taller and Joshua is attempting to negate his height disadvantage by getting into the body of defenders to draw fouls and get to the free throw line.
Glenn Rhone — 2020 6’5” F
Rhone is hard-nosed player who does the dirty work for Crescent City. He’s an intense defender and good rebounder who’s not afraid to mix it up in the lane and he can also contribute on offense as well. Rhone doesn’t hunt for his shot but has good touch around the rim when opportunities present themselves and is a good passer that understands where his teammates are on the court.
Tray Wilburn — 2020 6’4” F
Wilburn doesn’t have top-end athleticism but he’s developing into a solid contributor for Crescent City. He’s a good shooter who spreads the floor for the Pioneers and could give them another solid option offensively if he continues to develop his game off the dribble.
Caleb White — 2020 6’8” F
White got a little bit of run for Crescent City on Tuesday and will be a player to watch going forward. He wasn’t much of an offensive threat in his limited time on the court but his size and strength could be key for the Pioneers this year after losing senior forwards Johnny Vaughn and Kevin Charles.
St. Augustine
Devon Jefferson — 2019 6’4 G
Jefferson was a solid contributor for the Purple Knights last season and he may be their go-to option in 2018-19. He’s a very good athlete with a solid skill set and was aggressive on the offensive end looking for his shot. His confidence is growing as he adjusts to his new role with the Purple Knights but he’ll need to be a bit more efficient knocking down open shots from long range.
D’Mari Wiltz — 2020 6’1” PG
Wiltz assumed the role of lead guard for St. Augustine on Tuesday and he has the potential to be a contributor for the Purple Knights on the varsity level this season. He has good strength and speed and was able to get to the rim and complete a couple of tough finishes in traffic.
Eric Williams — 2021 6’6” F
Williams moves really well for his size and age and will be a player to keep tabs on throughout the summer. It was difficult to get a gauge on his potential in just one half of basketball but I think he’ll be a name to know going forward.
Sophie B. Wright
Damiree Burns — 2019 6’6 F
Burns had a breakout summer picking up nearly double-digit offers from Division I programs and he looked the part on Tuesday. He has tons of ways to put the ball in the basket scoring from the post, midrange, 3-point line or taking defenders off the dribble and finishing with authority at the rim. His intensity and enthusiasm to play the game never wains and he was arguably the best player to take the court on Tuesday.
Charlie Russell Jr. — 2019 6’7 W
Like Burns, Russell Jr. had a big summer on the recruiting front picking up offers from multiple Division I colleges. He was hot from 3-point range on Tuesday knocking down shots with ease and was aggressive when attacking the rim drawing a handful of fouls. The Warriors ran a couple of different actions to get Russell Jr. in isolation situations in midrange territory and he was efficient with those opportunities shooting over defenders or getting to the rim.
Jerome Anthony — 2019 5’9” PG
Anthony ran the show really well for Sophie B. Wright on Tuesday. He played with good pace getting the ball up and down the floor and made good decisions off of his drives kicking to open shooters or scoring in the lane when opportunities presented themselves. Anthony was also knocked down a few 3-pointers and has tightened up his ball handling over the spring.
