Hoops On The Beach: Day 1 Standouts
Over in Cancun, Mexico the International Basketball Training Hoops On The Beach tournament was in full force.
At the Kuchil Baxal gym, games with international talent were played including three sets of Florida teams compiled by IBT head trainer Carlos Morales Jr.
Here is a look at the top performers from Day 1 of the event.
Joshua Blazquez (Osceola/Team Florida 15U)
It was a slow start for 2021 guard Joshua Blazquez but he settled down as the point man, making some fine takes to the rack and getting others involved. The Osceola guard stands at around 5’10”, but he is a talented ballhandler and has a quick burst. Blazquez also has a reliable mid-range jumper when needed.
Tyrick Brascom (Tampa Bay Tech/Team Florida 19U)
Although his jump shot wasn’t falling consistently early on, 2018 Tampa Bay Tech guard Tyrick Brascom was attacking at will. He made it a habit of getting to the free throw line. Brascom plays super hard defense grabbing boards and took a charge from a 7-footer in the second quarter that was beyond gallant. He is constantly heading to the rack and drawing contact. Brascom is an unsigned senior who certainly deserves a chance with his pure scoring ability and physical defense.
Aron Cortez Resendiz (Lycas)
The clear leader, 2022 forward Aron Cortez Resendiz loves attacking and beating you with his seasoned ball moves. Cortez Resendiz stands at 6’4″ and is not the most athletic player, but he is fundamental. More often than not, he has the ball in his hands and he rarely comes out of the game.
Curtis Butler (Booker/Team Florida 15U)
Curtis Butler always brings energy and athleticism to any team he plays for. The 6’4″ 2021 Booker guard/forward is playing the big man role for Team Florida 15U, running the floor, grabbing boards and putting them back. His 3-point game is always a weapon.
Paumian Mariano (Alphas)
At 6’9″, Paumian Mariano has ridiculously long arms and is always vocal on defense. The center uses his body well and has an impressive spin move to outwork defenders. He was getting to the basket often and scoring inside for the Alphas.
Felipe Doria (Orlando Christian Prep/Team Florida 17U)
A sharpshooter from outside, Felipe Doria plays a euro type of basketball which is fun to watch. The 2020 forward is headed to Orlando Christian Prep this season after playing at IMG. He was hitting from deep in a blowout win for Team Florida 17U over the Estrellas. Doria is around 6’5”, has a very good feel for the floor and plays with the anticipation of the next play to make.
