Francisco’s Finest: St. John Bosco League (Day 2 Standouts)
Francisco’s Finest: St. John Bosco League (Day 2 Standouts)
BELLFLOWER, CA—St. John Bosco was the host for what has been one of the “must” stops on the evaluating tour the last few years. Many of the elite programs for Southern California make their way to the Braves gymnasium for some epic clashes. This time around we saw the likes of Harvard Westlake-sans Johnny Juzang—and their evolving big man Mason Hooks. In addition, St. Augustine and their rising junior Chibuzo Agbo made their way up from San Diego to exhibit their new team for the up and coming season.
Untapped Potential
Joseph “Jo Jo” Johnson (Damien)
2021, PG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Johnson is a slick lefty who has an abundance of natural tools. His speed and quickness package is high-level and he’s quite the creative finisher. He can knock in shots as well and his passing prowess is impressive. The physical tools are evident, but his decision making (shooting in particular) can be erratic. As the game slows down for him, thus his stock will increase.
Scotty Washington (St. John Bosco)
2021, SG, 6-foot-4, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: When it comes to throwing around the word upside, look no further than Washington. Length and quickness are part of the physical package while scoring instincts and passing acumen are part of the skill package. Toss in a solid dose of savvy and you have Washington.
Cameron Thrower (Harvard Westlake)
2022, SG, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Physically Thrower is ready for varsity competition with an ideal combination of length and strength. He plays at a good pace, can knock in 3s, and his decision making was quite good considering his youth.
Mr. Crafty
Spencer Hubbard (Harvard-Westlake)
2020, PG, 5-foot-8, 140 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hubbard may be small in stature, but he is full of moxie and craftiness. He pushes the ball well in transition, breaks down defenders off the dribble via the crossover move, and he changes speeds well. Not too mention he can knock in open jump shots and competes at a high level.
Big and Skilled
Amar Brown (Damien)
2020, C, 6-foot-7, 235 pounds
Joel’s Take: Brown is one of the more improved “Bigs” in So-Cal. He has terrific feet, long arms, and he can snatch rebounds in and out of his area due to his magnetic hands and timing. He can score on the block via the drop step and he knows how to carve out space and seal on the block.
The Next Step?
Chibuzo Agbo (San Diego/St. Augustine)
2020, PF/WF, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds
2020 WF Chibuzo Agbo has a potent combination of power and agilityJoel’s Take: Agbo is a bit of a “tweener” at this stage of his development. The strongly-built 4-man has some perimeter skills (solid jump shot) and he possesses good instincts for the game. However, he’s a bit of a cross between a 3 and 4 at this stage and will need to improve his face-up skills and perimeter defense going forward to increase his stock.
