2019 Montverde G Trae Broadnax talks junior season, adversity, recruitment and more
Despite what he calls a hard season, 2019 Montverde G Trae Broadnax is generating looks from plenty of colleges.
The 6’3″, 175-pounder holds 14 offers from Division I schools.
Offers: UAB, Columbia, UMass, FGCU, UNC Greensboro, FSU, Liberty, College of Charleston, UNC Charlotte, Wofford, Bucknell, FAU and USF.
Interest: Tulane, South Carolina, Cal Berkeley, Georgia and East Carolina.
Broadnax says FGCU is the hardest school after him right now. He took a visit there on Saturday afternoon.
He talks about the adversity he faced in his junior season.
“My junior year was a bit of a struggle playing with the post-grad team. I came in ranked (which doesn’t really matter I’ve come to learn) to completely being out of the rankings altogether,” Broadnax told Prep Hoops. “I sat a lot with both teams and I lost a lot of momentum in what I thought would’ve been the complete opposite. I got really bad to the point where my coach lost confidence in me so it didn’t matter how many good practices I put together.
“Now, I say all this because I am to blame for all of this happening to me. I didn’t have confidence in myself or in my game, I would over think everything, I was scared to handle the ball and I wasn’t playing defense. After the season every one asked me if I was coming back next year and I said most definitely, no doubt because it might seem like all of this was a failure but it wasn’t, it was a huge success. After the season was over I went to work in the weight room added some muscle and my overall game has gotten better. My confidence has also grown so much that I’m ready for anything.”
He is picking up college attention at the right time.
This spring and summer, Broadnax is spending it with Upward Stars SE.
“What I’ve learned the most is that I need to demand the ball from my teammates more,” he said. “That isn’t a bad thing either, you’ve seen AAU before there are people who are going to dominate the ball. On my team I need to be one of those people.”
Broadnax pointed to his offensive versatility, basketball IQ and shooting ability as his biggest strengths. He says he wants to improve his ballhandling, shot off the bounce, athleticism and confidence.
The arrow is pointing up for Broadnax this summer. Despite a lost junior year, he’s coming back for more at Montverde and looking to show off his newly born confidence and increased skill set.
