15U Second Team All Grassroots (Spring Edition)
Based on performance and recruiting stock rising, the following five players have distinguished themselves as Second Team All Grassroots for the spring.
PG – Jaden Hameed (2021), 5’10”, All Ohio Red / VASJ
PG – AJ Mirgon (2021), 5’11”, Mid Ohio Pumas Elite / Hilliard Bradley
G – Meechie Johnson (2021), 6’0”, Hard Work Basketball / Garfield Heights
F – Tyrese Hughey (2021), 6’6”, Ohio Hoopsters – Tillman / Licking Heights
C – Logan Duncomb (2021), 6’8”, Mid Ohio Pumas Elite / Moeller
– Hameed shows leadership qualities as Red’s point guard. On a team with various players capable of playing point, Hameed brings a sense of calmness with his patience and decision-making. When off-ball, Hameed stretches the floor as a consistent 3-point shooter. The VASJ product has offers from Youngstown State and Winthrop already.
– Mirgon’s instinctual passing ability keeps the Pumas offense flowing in the halfcourt. After spending last year with their 15U team, Mirgon’s maturity as a ball-handler is apparent. He also rebounds in traffic, is a quick defender, and has improved as a spot-up shooter. Mirgon is especially good at getting into the lane and protecting the ball.
– Johnson, who is playing up at the 16U level with the hometown Hard Work Basketball program, is about a bucket. He plays with a pace that puts pressure on the defense and can absolutely stroke it from the outside. Johnson’s shooting ability opens up the floor for his teammates, who he often hits with assists from the top of the key. Johnson reportedly received offers from Florida and Kent State this spring.
– Hughey’s dominance around the basket led OH-Tillman to a no. 4 spot in the spring edition of our team rankings. He’s dominated most of the competition in local tournaments and the adidas Gauntlet Silver. The springy athlete shows shades of former Reynodlsburg big man Tre Williams with his above the rim finishing, frame, and activity level. Hughey also has the quickness to switch onto smaller defenders. We also wouldn’t be surprised if Hughey is knocking down outside jumpers by this time next season.
– Although Duncomb’s production doesn’t match some of his Pumas teammates, his ceiling as a prospect is the highest on Ohio’s no. 2 team. The young big man scores through contact and routinely fights for offensive rebounds. Extremely lanky and will likely continuing growing. Duncomb shined at the Run N’ Slam against some of the Midwest’s top 2021 post players. Moeller’s future starting center visited Xavier this spring.
