You could say that 2017-18 was pretty good for Austin Forrar. The tough 6-foot-3, 190-pound wing not only helped Barlow to a share of the Mount Hood Conference title but also a state tournament appearance, where he capped off his career with a 21-point performance against Lincoln. Basketball hasn’t ended for Forrar as he has suited up as an unsigned senior this spring with Deep III.
“It’s worked out really well,” Forrar said. “We’re a little bit smaller so I’ve gotten the opportunity to play fast and run up and down the court and I’ve been shooting from the outside a lot. We’re definitely a defensive team and it’s helped us win a lot of games. It’s been fun and it’s elevated my game.”
Forrar was particularly impressive in Saturday’s action at The Hoop Memorial Day Classic. He shot the ball well from the perimeter but also contributed with his size by taking it strong inside and finishing some and-ones. He performed similarly in the spring and as a result, college basketball is in his sights.
“It’s been crazy as I’ve had quite a few schools talking to me, inviting me to their open gyms,” Forrar said. “I’ve been hearing from a lot of community colleges like Clackamas, Mount Hood, and Blue Mountain, and I’ve also talked to Lewis and Clark.”
Multnomah University has also been in contact and there are connections as Forrar’s father attended and played basketball there. Forrar is totally open to starting his playing career at the JC level as he believes a couple of years there will help him get ready for the next level.
At this point he’s keeping all of his options open, looking forward to the rest of the summer and then letting his recruitment play out. “Deep III has given me the opportunity I don’t think I had before,” Forrar said. “We have some big tournaments in July and then I’m going to try and visit as many open gyms and colleges as I can and then we’ll see where it goes from there. I’m just looking for the school that has the right fit for me.”
Forrar ranks as the #68 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2018 rankings.
