Recruiting Report: Tyler Wahl (2019)
2019 jack-of-all-trades prospect Tyler Wahl of Lakeville North was offered by Minnesota two weeks ago and recently took an unofficial visit to the school.
Tyler spoke with Prep Hoops Thursday night about his first visit to Minnesota as it went very well.
“The visit to Minnesota went well, we just visited the Athlete’s Village and Williams Arena,” Tyler said. “We are going to do more the next time I get on campus.”
What stood out to Wahl most about his time on the Twin Cities campus?
“Having everything you need in one place is something that really stood out to me, and also being around all different types of athletes together when in the facilities,” Wahl said.
Tyler earned his offer from the Gophers two weeks ago and immediately told us “I think it’s very cool to have the home state take interest and offer me early.”
When Wahl spoke with Prep Hoops about ten days ago he had only been in contact with Minnesota Head Coach Richard Pitino temporarily. Since then Wahl spoke with Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 and explained the relationship he’s built with Coach Pitino in a short amount of time.
“The Gophers just started talking to me and to have an offer from the homestate school is pretty cool,” Tyler said to Wolfson. “Coach Pitino and I have just started texting and we’ve had a few phone calls plus the visit.
“Coach Pitino seems really cool and a good coach. I watched them this winter. I can see myself fitting in there as they often play three guards and I want to play some guard in college.”
Also offering Wahl recently was Wisconsin although the Badgers have been in contact with Tyler for a lot longer period of time. Tyler has built a nice relationship with Badger Coach Greg Gard.
“Coach Gard is really personable,” Tyler said. “He likes knowing how my day went whenever he calls me. I just really like him and our relationship is really strong right now.”
Wahl moved into the open period with offers from Northern Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado State, and Drake. He then added Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa State, and Butler to his list. Everything has come really fast. Tyler plans to visit Wisconsin during team camp in June.
“It was surreal getting offers from the high major schools,” Tyler said. “I had barely been talking to them, just a text here and there, but then they’ve come at me with a full recruitment so it’s pretty cool.”
The most interesting thing that Wahl said to ESPN 1500 is what makes him most interesting as a player, his versatility. As we’ve said so many times before that Gopher fans are likely tiring of the conversation, Tyler Wahl has played every spot on the floor in the past dozen months, and done it well.
“I started out the season at Lakeville North playing power forward but as the year went on I started bringing up the ball and playing point guard,” Wahl said.
“I like playing point guard, getting everybody involved running the floor. Coaches like my versatility and the coaches that are looking at me like that I can play several positions.”
