Prospect Watch: Trey Shannon (2019)
Class of 2019 guard Trey Shannon of Wellington-Napoleon has done his part during the past three years to keep up the Tigers’ strong winning tradition.
The 6’1″ guard has been stuffing the stat sheet for three years in leading the Tigers to three consecutive Class 2 district championships. He has earned All-State honors for his efforts the past two seasons while earning early interest from schools such as William Penn, Columbia College and College of the Ozarks.
Shannon has grown up watching the Tigers winning lot of games and making deep postseason runs as a youngster. In his three years as a varsity starter, the Tigers have won 78 games, with three conference and district titles. As a freshman, he was a key player on a team that won 30 games and finished third in the state tournament.
“I’ve grown up watching a lot of good teams,” Shannon said. “So now, being at that level, I’m trying to carry on that tradition and it has been a lot of fun.”
As a junior, Shannon did it all in leading the Tigers to a 21-8 record, averaging 23.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.7 steals while shooting 47 percent from the field, 81 percent from the free throw line and making 70 3-pointers. The one thing he wants to accomplish is to take the Tigers that last step and get to the Final Four.
“A big goal of mine is to get to the Final Four in Springfield,” Shannon said. “We haven’t been there since my freshman year. We’ve been close, but we fell short the past two years.”
As he prepares for his senior year, Shannon is currently running with the KC Pacers 17U Blue team during the grassroots season. With the Pacers, he gets to settle into more of a traditional point guard role, where he can showcase his excellent playmaking skills and high basketball IQ against the top competition around the country that they face.
“It makes me a lot stronger and quicker playing against this competition,” he said. “It slows the game down for me in high school.”
