Prospect Spotlight: Tyson Garff (2019)
A top player in Utah’s 2019 class, Davis’ 6-foot-6 point guard Tyson Garff has a lot to be desired by college programs.
The big lead guard is currently Utah’s 7th-ranked 2019, and discussed his current skill-set with PHUT, and what it is that’s made him such a sought-after prospect,
“I think my biggest skill-set is shooting, and I can hit an open shot pretty well. Getting to the basket is one of my strongest skill-sets, too,” said Garff. “When I’m out there, I’m trying to score and create for my teammates.”
As a junior with the Pirates, Garff played his role well. And says managing the team from the point guard spot was his primary responsibility.
“It was a good season, I felt like I was a role player, I was doing what the coach wanted me to do,” he said. “I wasn’t much of a scorer for the team, but I was the point guard and in charge of keeping everyone calm and keeping everyone on the same page.”
Garff’s Davis squad has gotten together this spring, and they played in a tournament in Boise. Things went really well, Garff says it was a sign of things to come.
“Our senior season will be good,” he said. “Me and (fellow standout) Brendan Redford will be in control and taking most of the shots.”
In the meantime, Garff will be running with Exum Elite 17U, an adidas Gauntlet team.
“Being able to play on the Gauntlet was awesome. The competition there is amazing, and being on the same floor with those guys is awesome,” said Garff.
Since the spring, Garff has picked up interest from Utah Valley, Utah, Utah State, Colorado State, also Ivy League schools Penn and Princeton.
“My academics are pretty good right now. Being a student-athlete is one of the biggest parts of being in high school,” said Garff in regards to the Ivy League interest.
As for his summer goals?
“My biggest goal this summer is to try and be one of the best players on the court, alongside (Exum Elite teammate) Rylan Jones.”
