Prospect Spotlight: Lamar Wright (2019)
A newcomer to the Southern California high school hoops scene this past season, 6-foot-7 shooting guard Lamar Wright made his mark as an intriguing long and athletic wing.
Wright, and his twin brother Shamar, are the sons of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, and Lamar says it’s size and athleticism that help him most to succeed out on the floor.
“I think my athleticism and my length are my strengths. That helps with my defense and scoring in transition,” said Lamar. “And I can knock down an open 3-pointer. I’m also a very unselfish player, and look to pass as well.”
In his first season at Murrieta Mesa (the brothers were formerly playing in Texas), Lamar played very well, and says he averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game.
“I believe that my junior season went pretty well. We made it far in the playoffs, and I played alright,” he said. “I thought I was a pretty good leader, and led vocally, and I always wanted to keep my team involved, stuff like that.”
This spring, Lamar’s been running with Team Elite 17U in the adidas Silver Gauntlet. He says things have been going well so far.
“So far this spring has been really good. We’ve only lost two games, they were both really good teams,” said Lamar.
“My brother (twin, Shamar) and I have a couple looks right now, and hopefully we’ll have an offer by the end of the summer.”
Lamar mentioned D1 schools Liberty, UNC-Greensboro and Cal-Riverside as schools that are keeping tabs on him.
“Those three are the main three that have been talking to me,” said Lamar.
