Sometimes all you need is the right opportunity. During his junior season, Justin Bieker found himself playing in the post at Jesuit. But the 6-foot-5, 170-pound lefty believes he’s best on the wing and this spring for the Nike Team Northwest 17U squad, Bieker has gotten the chance and he’s performing well above even his own high expectations.
“Coach (Yusuf) Leary has been using me as a guard ad I’ve been playing really, really well,” Bieker said. “It’s a big season for me in AAU ball and I’ve been putting pressure on myself, but it’s all come together well.”
Bieker has put together some 20-point games on the circuit so far and has impressed coaches with his outside shooting ability. His college recruitment is just getting started, but after a big game at a tournament in Anaheim, Bieker started hearing from Chico State and Cal Lutheran. He’s enjoyed the attention but does have a hope when it comes to his college future.
“I’d really like to play in California,” Bieker said. “My goal is to either walk-on or play somewhere in the West Coast Conference.”
Bieker noted that Nike Team Northwest director Greg Dundon had been talking to San Diego about coming out to see him play this summer and Bieker is definitely hoping to make an impression on the Toreros and other college programs. “I’m going to keep on working and keep on pushing myself,” he said.
Bieker currently ranks as the #34 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
