Prospect Profile: Jonathon Nchekwube (2019 Churchill HS/The Hoop Salem)
While blessed with size and athleticism, Jonathan Nchekwube is still a work in progress. The developing 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward from Churchill would be the first to tell you that, but he’s been patient with the process. Running with The Hoop Salem 17Us this spring, Nchekwube has been putting in the time while having fun on the AAU circuit.
“I’ve been playing defense and rebounding, running the floor and getting easy layups,” Nchekwube said. “We’re a pretty talented team and I think we’re going to have a really good summer.”
Nchekwube has heard that he’s created a buzz with college coaches who have seen him play. “I haven’t heard anything directly but I’ve heard that they like that I’m athletic and big,” Nchekwube said. “Also that I’ve been playing pretty good defense.”
Nchekwube is completely open when it comes to his recruiting, but does note one thing that’s important to him at the next level. “I’m looking for a coach that really wants to play me and develop me,” Nchekwube said. “I don’t just want to be another body on the team. I want to be able to get minutes in a game.”
In the meantime, there are still tournaments to play this summer and Nchekwube is ready to get to work.
“I want to improve my ball-handling and my shooting form because when I get to college I’m going to playing the three,” he said.
Nchekwube currently ranks as the #32 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
