Isaiah Amato feels that his game is coming along. The talented 6-foot-4, 172-pound guard from Central Catholic is playing this spring with the Rose City Rebels 16U squad and while it’s taken some time getting used to new teammates, he’s getting more comfortable with the system and his role on the team.
“Our first tournament was at the EYBL and I felt I played well for the most part,” Amato said. “I felt like I played a lot better in our second tournament as I felt more comfortable with my role. I’ve been coming off the bench giving energy and running the offense with the second team.”
Amato feels that his game continues to evolve. “I feel like I’m getting more consistent with my jumper, especially with pulling up,” Amato said. “I want to be able to shoot it over anybody. I also have a tendency to not shoot the ball so I’m working on getting more aggressive in general and being a vocal leader.”
While on the 16U circuit, Amato has drawn the attention of college coaches in attendance. In fact, he had previously attracted the attention of Eastern Washington who went ahead and decided to get in early in Amato’s recruitment.
“They said that they liked how I played at their camp last year,” Amato said. “At first I didn’t know that they had offered but when I figured it out I was really happy. They’re one of my top schools. Even if I get offered later by the Pac-12 or something they will always be one of my top schools.”
Amato likes what the Eagles have to offer but isn’t ready to make any decisions. He’s also heard from Portland and is planning on attending some elite camps at Seattle University and Utah this summer. It’s obviously early but overall he’s looking for an environment and program where he’ll feel the most comfortable.
“I really want a family feel – I’m going to be there for the next four years of my life,” Amato said. “I also want a winning team as I want to be able to make the (NCAA) tournament.”
Amato and the Rebels 16U squad will be playing at the West Coast Spring Showcase this weekend in Vancouver.
