Live Period II: 2019 SG Standouts
The second live period has come to a close and coaches are back at the respective schools, we are back at home, and prospects are fielding calls from those interested in them from their play. Today, we take a look back and see who played well and who some new names are from this weekend. This is a breakdown of the best shooting guards that I saw on the weekend from the Spring Classic and UA Midwest Showcase.
Jared Hankins | 6’4 SG | Indiana Elite Fastbreak | Lawrence North (IN)
Hankins struggled to shoot the ball a little bit in this one but he made up for that on the defensive end and getting to the basket. He was getting run out layups in transition and was looking to make the right passes. He really impressed me with how he can affect the game even when his shot isn’t dropping. High motor with a ton of athleticism.
Mark Johnson | 6’4 SG | Big 3 Basketball Barrington (IL)
Johnson is a guy who is able to get to the rim and finish. He showed a few nice spin moves on the perimeter and also a couple nice end-to-end finishes with the ball. His shot needs a little work right now as his main game is attacking the basket but he’s a solid college prospect.
Wendell DeMyers | 6’3 SG | Indiana Elite Fastbreak | Traders Point Christian (IN)
DeMyers was really solid in this one. He had a couple blocks and was playing really good defense. His ball handling was on display in the open court as he showed off his ability to create space for himself with the ball. Vision was exceptional as well finding open guys under the basket.
Beau Bailey | 6’3 SG | Illinois Stars Elite | Dixon (IL)
He can flat out shoot the ball. He has a good looking outside shot and if he has any space he is going to get it off and knock it down. Runs the floor really well and looks for the ball to score. Could stand to gain a little athleticism for help on the defensive end but on the offensive end he’s set as a shooter.
Shaden Clanton | 6’4 SG | Illinois Stars Elite | Rockford East (IL)
Clanton is a superbly athletic guard who’s best trait is getting to the rim. He is solid on defense reading the plays and blocking shots. He had a few monster blocks in the game. A guy who won’t shoot it as much as most guards but will more try and drive to the rim. A defensive stopper on the wing.
Justin Hensley | 6’4 SG | Indiana Elite Metro | Cathedral (IN)
Hensley struggled today shooting the deep ball and with his handling. He still showed flashes of brilliance as he got a few steals and played solid on ball defense. He is much more athletic than he looks and if he gets any space he’s beginning to be able to take his man off the bounce.
Hayden Peterson | 6’2 SG | Oklahoma Run PWP | Owasso (OK)
Peterson is a great shooter who doesn’t have to be set to fire it off. He needs to work on his handling a bit but other than that he is a threat on offense. He is a really solid offensive piece who can bring it on the defensive end as well. Really good option for you as your third or fourth scorer because of his ability to shoot the ball.
Bryan Antoine | 6’5 SG | Team Rio | Ranney (NJ)
Antonie is a long, long athletic guard who can really do anything that he wants on the basketball court. He can shoot the lights out of the ball and he can handle it very well with both hands. He has a high basketball IQ and sees the floor very well. One of the best players in the nation and was very active on both ends this weekend.
Jalen Gaffney | 6’3 SG | Team Rio | Westtown (NJ)
Gaffney is a straight shooter who can score that ball at a high level. He made jumpers, runners, and made a couple baskets right at the rim. He’s one of the better pure scorers that I saw all weekend long and he really gets after it on the offensive end of the ball. A great off ball guard to have in the lineup.
Jaykwon Walton | 6’6 SG | Team Thad | Carver (TN)
Walton is a very tall and thin guard who is able to cut through the defense and score the ball. He needs to improve his off hand a little bit as he struggled a bit to go both ways with the ball. He has the length to give other teams fits on defense as well. Should see a huge stock rise this summer.
Damion Baugh | 6’3 SG |Team Thad | Tennessee Prep (TN)
Baugh is a guy who can rattle off a ton of points in spurts but he makes his money on the defensive end of the ball. He has quick hands and is a guy who is able shut down the opposing team’s best player. He’s a low major type of player right now but will see a huge stock rise if his offense starts to come more fluidly.
