Jayhawk Invitational: Top young Wings (2020)
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.— Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several young wings who raised their profile at last weekend’s Jayhawk Invitational in Kansas City.
Ty Berry, 6’3, G, 2020, Newton, KC Run GMC 261U
Berry had it all working at the offensive end on Friday. He showed terrific range, knocking down several 3-pointers from well beyond the arc, got to the basket off the bounce and shined in transition. He is an excellent playmaker and showed he can play on the ball when Johnson goes to the bench, and can play off the ball where he is probably a more natural fit.
Jack Chapman, 6’5, G, 2021, Blue Valley Northwest, KC Run GMC 15U
Chapman plays with a big motor and is in constant attack mode. He has a natural feel for the game, plays with a high basketball IQ and shows good leadership qualities. He consistently beats opponents by staying in constant motion off the ball, and with the ball he is capable of making plays off the bounce, finding open teammates or hitting the open shot. Chapman is at his best attacking the basket where he is a terrific finisher.
Zeke Mayo, 6’3, G, 2021, Lawrence, KC Run GMC 15U
Mayo is a long, rangy guard with a fluid jumper that stretches well beyond the 3-point arc. He can handle the ball, play both guard spots and is a creative passer who sees the floor and finds the open man.
Harper Jonas, F, 6’3, 2020, Andover, NLHA
Jonas is a scrappy defensive player who is light on his feet. He runs the floor well and can block shots, rebound and make plays around the basket. He is patient with the ball and makes thoughtful passes on the wing. Jonas can also put the ball on the floor and score baskets in traffic. He likes to score quickly and has a quick release to his shot.
D’Anthony Pennington, 6’5, G, 2020, North Kansas City, NDaGym
Pennington is a smooth guard who does the dirty work down low while showcasing his talent from the 2-spot. He has a thin frame, long arms and a cleverness to his game. He can find his stroke from midrange and stretch it out behind the line. He has a high release with good form. A player that makes smart decisions with the ball and can rebound and take it from one side to the other.
