Jayhawk Invitational: Top point guards (2020, 21)
OVERLAND PARK, Kan — Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several of the top young point guards who raised their profile last weekend at the Jayhawk Invitational in Kansas City.
Max Alexander, 5’11, G, 2021, McPherson HS, Pray N Play
Alexander is a sneaky defender who can who can steal the ball when opponents least expect it. He has a high basketball IQ and good court awareness for his age. Alexander likes to rebound and score near the basket. He can find his rhythm from behind the 3-point line, but he pursues high percentage shots. An intelligent guard who continues to impress.
2-Wazele Evans, 5’10, G, 2020, Wyandotte, KC Team Rush
Evans is an athletic guard who moves his feet well and stays in front of opponents. He keeps pressure up top and makes them work for buckets. Evans is also organized, a player who doesn’t let things get to him with plays aren’t going his way. On offense he fulfills the duties of a point/shooting guard. He sets the pace for his team and contributes buckets, assists and rebounds under the basket.
Jackie Johnson, 5’9, PG, Wichita, KC Run GMC 16U
Playing up an age group with the 2020 class, Wichita’s Jackie Johnson showed he’s as good a 2021 guard as there is in the state. He is blessed with elite quickness and playmaking skills. and while he isn’t very big, but that doesn’t affect his game much. On Friday he blew past defenders and got to the basket whenever he wanted against xx and showed the ability to finish around bigger players at the rim, or drop off passes to open teammates for easy looks. Mix in deep range from beyond the 3-point arc and Johnson has the makings of an elite prospect.
5-Torry Moore, 5’11, G, 2020, Wyandotte, KC Team Rush
Moore is a solid player who can cause problems around the rim. He isn’t as tall as some post players, but he’s stout and isn’t easily moved around. Moore holds his ground and can find easy buckets a few feet from the rim.
1-Trey Reid, 5’11, G, 2020, Maize South, NLHA
Reid is a scrappy guard who can force turnovers and capitalize on the mistake. He’s a quick, one who handles the ball and plays well on the move. He can score in transition and make shots from deep if he has the look. Reid doesn’t back down if his shot doesn’t fall. He stays after it and fights to get on the board.
11-Tre Washington, 5’10, PG, 2020, Derby, NLHA
Washington plays his best when he has the ball in his hands. He makes good decisions on the floor, someone who passes well and can score it for himself. He’s a creator. He knows when to get his teammates involved and when to put the ball on the floor. Washington also proved he can be a consistent shooter from behind the line.
