Prospect Spotlight: Burke Smith (2020)
Burke Smith, a class of 2020 power forward from Trinity Episcopal, was a standout for 16U DC Premier last weekend at Hoop Group’s Southern Jam Fest. The 6-foot-10 power forward, who recorded 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 blocks in a triple overtime win vs. the Southern Maryland All Stars, continues to show signs of progress.
“The most improved part of my game over this last year is my ability to play defense, I have gotten faster and I have also learned how to play smart on defense and block shots well,” Smith stated. “Right now, I’m working on improving my agility such as my vertical jump and lateral speed, of course I’m also working on getting stronger too. When it comes to specifically basketball, most of what I’m working on is a lot of offense with the ball, mostly dribbling but also making a move with the ball.”
In an effort to get to practice more consistently, Smith says he will be playing with 17U Team Richmond Garner Road moving forward. While he has no offers yet, Smith is an AB Honor Roll student with a GPA of about 3.5, and reportedly holds current interest from Davidson, Princeton, George Mason, George Washington, Holy Cross, Rice, William and Mary, and Tulane. Smith is an active big man who likes to run the floor and can block shots. He shoots the ball very well from 3 point and mid range.
“My goals for the summer are to develop my game more all around, specifically dribbling and making moves with the ball, and also improve my strength and agility,” said Smith.
What can he bring to a college program down the road?
“I can be a player that plays all around, has the ability to score from all levels and play defense at a high level.”
