UPDATED 2020 Rankings: Highest Debuts
We’ve seen plenty of Iowa’s class of 2020 guys up to this stage of their high school careers, but there’s still plenty left to see. These guys are at a point where they’re no younger underclassmen on the hardwood, yet there’s still so much ahead of them. Some guys flourished as sophomores, others gems have yet to be unearthed. Here you can see the new and current installment of 2020 rankings, and below is this edition’s biggest risers.
Daniel Wright (Sergeant Bluff-Luton) — No. 20
We knew very little about Wright up until about a month ago, that’s when he showcased his versatile and savvy style of play at the state tourney. It was evident by looking at the stats that he was a fine player, but seeing his smooth stroke, big frame and basketball smarts in person was striking.
Tyler Andrews (Cedar Rapids Kennedy) — No. 21
First, he showed us what he could do at our Top 250 Expo last fall. Then, he was one of the very best players at the FutureStars Showcase in Hiawatha last month. Andrews is 6’5, can shoot it a little bit and has some serious lift. He transferred from Linn-Mar to Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and should have a breakout junior season with the Cougars next winter.
Sean Peeters (Assumption) — No. 33
This 6’4 forward burst onto the scene this season by posting very decent numbers of 12.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He’s a lengthy post that plays bigger than his height and will have a big 16U summer ahead playing with Quad City Elite.
Nick Reid (Central City) — No. 38
Another guy who stood out at the FutureStars Showcase, Reid was flashing a smooth jumper to go with his lengthy 6’4 frame. He had a huge season for Class 1A Central City, going for 18 points per game and 8.3 rebounds. He’ll be playing with the Iowa Barnstormers this spring and summer, and could continue to rise with a big offseason.
Jon Schwarte (Treynor) — No. 39
Shot-blocker extraordinaire Jon Schwarte averaged 3.0 blocks per game as a sophomore, and also led the Class 2A runner-up Cardinals in rebounds with 7.6 per. At 6’7 and with some nice length, Schwarte could be a guy that college coaches are clamoring over very soon.
Jake Beckman (Xavier) — No. 46
It’s tough to break the lineup at elite basketball programs as a sophomore, but that’s just what Beckman did this winter with the Saints. An athletic and supremely quick combo-guard, Beckman played key minutes in 26 games for Xavier this season, and should take on a much larger role next season as a result of Matthew Mims departing.
Wyatt Wegener (Algona) — No. 59
Wegener burst onto the scene this season, and after a relatively quiet freshman season with Algona, he led the Class 3A Bulldogs this season in points (16.3), assists (2.5), steals (1.6) and rebounds (6.1). What an impressive sophomore campaign for the 6’2 wing.
John Joyce (Bishop Garrigan) — No. 63
Bishop Garrigan has a ton of talent returning next season, and they’ll have this sophomore gem for the next two seasons. Joyce is a 6’1 guard who averaged 10.1 points on some impressive shooting clips of 49/41/79. He also dished out 4.2 assists and led the Bears with 1.9 steals per game.
