Report on 2018 So Cal Spring Tip Off
The 3rd annual So Cal Spring Tip Off was held April 7-8 at Next Level Sports Complex in Garden Grove. 120 teams from the western United States participated. Top Prospects: (*indicates highest consideration)
6’5 PF Christian Bood 2020 of Bishop Montgomery HS (Team Why Not 16U)
Stretch four type prospect who is most effective out of the pick-and-pop where he can face-up and knock down a catch-and-shoot 3-point shot. Has good length and a strong frame.
6’0 CG Za-On’Tay Boothman 2020 of Buckeye Union HS (Powerhouse Price 16U)
Scores in bunches and from every level. Gets great lift on his pull-up jumper, knocked down a number of corner 3-pointers and used his wiggle and ball skills to get to the bucket where he finished with a crafty layup package.
*6’6 SF Doctor Bradley of Serra HS 2019 (Team Why Not EYBL 17U/Team LA 17U)
Super athletic with great length. Good handle for a forward and can in and out a defender and go right by to basket. More of a slasher then shooter. Rebounds well in area. Needs to add weight to frame/get stronger. (D1 prospect)
6’5 PF Cedric Bridges of Westview HS 2018 (AZ Factory 17U)
Rebounder with high motor. Can shoot it facing up to elbow and in. Above the rim athlete who competes at high level. Rim runner plays aggressive on defense. (may prep)
6’8 C Amar Brown of Damien HS 2020 (WCE 16 UAA- LA)
Big-bodied postman with some strength. Can post up some- has a min jump hook. Can rebound in his box.
*6’4 G Brian Brown 2020 of Citrus Hill (Cali Elite 17u Black)
Very high IQ, facilitating PG. Great motor defensively, high level on-ball defender. Very good passer, sees the floor.
6’7 G/F Judah Brown of Pacifica Christian OC (Dream Vision 16u)
Very athletic and versatile wing. Athletic and long enough to defend multiple positions. Scores primarily through athletic superiority… let’s see how his skills continue to develop.
6’7 C Wynton Brown of St. John’s Bosco HS 2020 (Los Angeles Elite 16U Premier)
One of the better sophomores shot blockers viewed. Long and stronger frame/build. Moves well end to end. Raw offensively with basic moves and will need to progress. (D1 prospect)
6’2 PG Trent Brown 2019 of Pinnacle HS (Jamal Murray Elite)
Confident and consistent 3-point shooter. Moves well and works hard off the ball when setting up and coming off of screens to get open. Always shot ready and provides a good target for teammates to hit on drive and kicks. Can finish in transition.
6’3 SG Xavier Brown 2020 of Sheldon HS (Team Lillard 16)
Physical glue-guy who guards multiple positions with his strong frame and physicality. Good rebounder for his size. Absorbs and finishes through contact on drives to the basket.
*6’4 PG Nimari Burnett 2020 of Prolific Prep (Dream Vision 16u)
High level shooter with deep range. Shot selection is a little shaky. Very nice ball handler. Very quick first step. Really difficult to guard. No brainer HM prospect.
*6’4 SF Tyree Campbell of Etiwanda HS 2020 (Prodigy 17 Elite)
Capable ball handler and passer, can finish in transition. Weird rotation on his shot but shoots it ok (slow release). Has a solid floater.
6’4 SF Tyler Broughton 2019 of Tesoro HS (SCA 17)
Very good defensive instincts both on and off the ball. Uses his length and anticipation to shoot passing lanes. Good athlete who is best when moving without the ball, finding weak spots in the defense and finishing around the basket.
6’3 CG Roy Clark of Fremont HS 2019 (Team LA 17)
Attacks in transition, does see the floor. Has long range can pull up in the half court. Has a solid hesitation move.
5’9 SG Tristan Carter of Buena HS (Ventura) 2019 (So Cal Future)
Scorer and tough competitor. Can shoot it to the 3 and is crafty to take the ball to the basket. Needs to add weight/get stronger. True gamer and two sport athlete (football).
6’6 G/F Sage Cardova 2018 of Prep school (I Play Elite 17)
Long and very athletic, but very thin…needs to add strength. Slasher and finisher.
6’3 SG Amarion Cash of Mountain Pointe HS 2018 (Powerhouse Hoops 17U Schumaker)
Long athletic scorer. Lefty has pull-up and 3pt range. Can slash to basket with long strides. Good on ball defender. Needs to add weight to frame/get stronger. (Multiple D2 offers.)
6’4 SG Skylar Certo of Notre Dame Prep 2019 (Powerhouse Hoops 17U Schumaker)
Top tier catch and shooter. High arc with consistent and quick release. Smart floor game will need to add weight to frame. Can drive the lane but prefers to score it from perimeter.
6’3 SG Ahmad Chambers 2018 of Cooper Academy (Cooper Elite 17)
Physical attacking wing who is best when slashing and finishing at the rim in transition. Does a nice job of moving without the ball in the half-court, finding open spots in the defense for easy buckets. Hit the open 3-point shot.
6’3 SG Tyrek Chambers 2019 of Desert Vista HS (Jamal Murray Elite)
Long and athletic wing with good speed and body control in transition. Gets to the rim and finishes at-will. Good on-ball defender due to his length, lateral speed and defensive instincts. Good rebounder for his position. Has a floater and a decent 3-point (set) shot.
5’9 PG CaCoa Chatman 2018 of St. Anthony HS (Prodigy Seniors)
Tough and high IQ point guard who can manage the pace of any game he’s in. Does a nice job of getting in the paint and distributing to teammates, but can knock down an open 3-point shot or hit a runner in the paint with touch.
6’5 PF Jeremiah Cherry of Eastlake MS 2022 (WCE 15U Black-SD)
Younger brother of Taeshon Cherry has nice upside. Very thick player with a nice touch inside. Runs court and rebounds in area. Range is currently limited to a paint scorer. Needs to keep adding to game. (D1 prospect)
6’1 PG Caleb Christopher of Cooper International 2019 (Truth EYBL 17U)
High motor one-man. Sees the floor on the break. Can shoot it with three range, solid driver.
6’3 SG Josh Christopher of Mayfair HS 2020 (Truth EYBL 17U)
Real nice skill set. Can score in bunches. Shoots it well, finishes well, has a polished middle game. Poor shot selection. Too much of a yapper. High major prospect but has a lot to learn.
5’5 PG John Clausell of Leuzinger HS 2019 (Truth EYBL 17U)
In the mold of Spud Webb/Mugsy Bogues. Ultra competitive. Leads a team. Pushes the break hard. Sees the floor well. Shoots it ok with long range, penetrates effectively. Defends aggressively.
6’4 SG Dalton Clevenger of ASI Prep Academy 2018 (ASI Prep Academy 17U)
Crafty shooter with deep range. Lefty has fast trigger and high confidence. Fair athlete but strong driver through contact. Division II prospect.
5’11 PG Jaden Cons of Brophy Prep 2019 (Alvin Gentry Elite 17U)
Shooting lead guard with high IQ. Easy 3pt range and fast shooting release. Good assist/turnover ratio. Knows how to play and plays within the flow of the offense without forcing anything.
*6’10 F/C Boubacar Coulibaly 2020 of San Gabriel Academy (Dream Vision 16u)
A bundle of potential…the sky is the limit depending on how he develops over the next couple years. Long and athletic, shot blocker. Active on the glass. On the thin side but has a frame that you can add mass to.
*6’0 PG Pierre Cockrell, Jr. 2019 of Garfield HS (Dream Vision 17)
High IQ floor general who plays with good pace, poise and presence. Understands how to run an elite level team due to good decision-making and pass-first mentality. Knows where and when to get his teammates the ball for them to be successful. Scoring mostly comes by way of the floater. Effective penetrator. Mid-level or higher prospect.
6’0 PG Devin Cole 2018 of Buena HS (805 Family 17)
Efficient scoring guard with a consistent 3-point jump shoot and good speed in transition and half-court settings. Good ball skills, doesn’t over-dribble and makes high IQ decisions and passes when setting up teammates.
5’9 SG Adrian Contreras 2019 of Orange Vista HS (Cali Elite 17 Blue)
Consistent 3-point shooter from multiple spots behind the arc. Has deep range and compact shooting mechanics complete with a quick release.
6’3 CG Carson Cook 20201 of La Costa Canyon HS (West Coast Elite SD 15 Silver)
Intriguing size, length and skill package for a young prospect. Good ball skills and feel for the game. Manages scoring and distributing well.
6’4 CG Graham Cook 2019 of La Costa Canyon HS (Cali Stars Elite 17)
Good size and feel for the position with ball skills and ability to initiate offense. Plays with a patience and good pace. Gets into the paint off the bounce and can distribute well on drive and kicks. Moves well without the ball, pulls up well in the half court.
6’3 CG Bryce Craver 2019 of Cantwell-Sacred Heart HS (SCA 17)
Strong and heady with a high basketball IQ. Explosive athleticism combined with strength allows him to finish above the rim or through contact. Has good feel, vision and passing on the ball.
6’7 PF Logan Cremonesi 2020 of Mater Dei HS (Team Why Not 16U)
Active and high motor prospect who does most of his work on the offensive and defensive boards. Good rebounder in and out of his space, gets the ball out quick to his point guard to start the break, and runs the middle of the floor looking for a missed shot to corral.
6’7 Nakial Cross 2020 of The Bishops School (WCE 16 Silver – SD)
Length and athleticism make him an impact player defensively. He could end up being a shut-down type defender. Worth tracking closely.
6’2 SG Cory Curtis 2021 of Coronado HS (Team Why Not 16U)
Long, rangy and athletic guard with good ball skills and feel when operating on the perimeter. Knocked down a couple of catch-and-shoot 3-pointers.
6’0 PG Khalil Custard 2020 of Liberty HS (Team Lillard 16U)
Gets to the basket at-will both in transition and half-court settings with his ability to get downhill. Changes speeds and direction without losing speed or balance. Finishes around the basket with either hand and over length.
*6’3” PG Danilo DaSilva of Redlands HS 2019 (IEBP All-Stars)
Athletic one man with a nice skill set. Confident ball handler and passer. Can make plays in transition. Gets to the basket on the drive.
6’2 SF Arnold Dates of Brophy Prep 2020 (Aim High 16U)
Very good defender with strong body/frame. Physical downhill driver who rebounds well. Needs to improve quickness and perimeter shooting.
