Prospect Spotlight – 6’5” G- Tevin Smith (2021)
One of the most intriguing prospects early in the 2021 class is 6’5” Guard out of Danville HS Tevin Smith. Smith just completed his Freshman campaign at Danville were he was a major contributor on the Varsity level. We had the opportunity to see Tevin for the first time this Spring at the NY2LA Swish N Dish.
Smith plays for the Hoops Avenue Manimal 15U team. He has good size from a combo guard standpoint at 6’5” and has really good athleticism and uses that on both ends of the court. On offense Smith can play on the ball or off and has a quick first step and burst to the rim. He has shown the ability early this spring to be able to score from all three levels including an improved perimeter game and outside shot from deep. He is best when he is out on the break and can make plays at the rim as well as get teammates involved. He has a really good feel for the game, and displayed solid court vision when on the ball dishing it out. On defense he has the tools to really be an elite defender. Size, quick feet and is a leaper that can get up and get rebounds and start the break. We talked to Smith about his HS season, his game and a little early recruiting.
Q: Just completed your first season at Danville HS how do you think your season went?
A: “It was good, I was expecting kind of what I was expecting, and I thought it went well even though we loss early in the 1st round.”
Q: Freshman year there are a lot of ups and downs freshman go through what were some highs and then what were some lows?
A: “The experience was a high, the teams we played and how we played where some highs. The lows were my defense I had to get used to the size and speed of guarding older senior players, so it was something I had to get used to.”
Q: So now playing on the 15U grassroots level you have impressed here at the NY2LA Swish N’ Dish with your explosiveness and ability to score around the rim. What are some things that you want to show this grassroots season?
A: “That I can be #1 people don’t think that, but I can do mostly anything and guard anybody”.
Q: So, describing your game what are some of your strengths?
A: Athleticism, mid-range game, finishing at the rim. I need to work on my dribbling, shooting off the dribble/ screen and regular shooting.
Q: As far as recruiting early on what schools are you hearing from?
A: Illinois, Stanford, UT-Martin, Morehead, Purdue.
