Prospect Spotlight: 2020 Woody Newton
2020 Woody Newton is currently slotted 6th in our Maryland/DC rankings and over the course of his high school season and some early spring action, he has not disappointed while on the court. Newton is one of the most versatile players in the entire country and is a matchup problem for numerous teams. If he has a mismatch down low, he will post up on the smaller defender but even if a bigger defender is on him, he will go right at him off the dribble. He is coming off an impressive sophomore season with McKinley Tech and is looking forward to the AAU season.
We caught up with him recently at the Metro Challenge and he was on a mission to shine against some of the areas best players, “I feel like I was kind of looked off during the high school season so I just wanted to show that I am one of the best players in the DMV.”
He broke down his high school season for us, “I ended my high school season good on an individual note, I finished the season averaging 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game but on a team’s success we fell a little short in the semifinals to a good Wilson team.
Multiple colleges are starting to show interest in the 2020 prospect, “Recently I picked up two high major offers from Xavier and Maryland and I currently have a Kansas State offer. Oklahoma State is also currently looking at me.” He broke down a few of those schools for us.
Maryland: “Me and Coach Turgeon recently sat down in his office and had a real great conversation. We talked about how I can improve and what I need to do to become good at the next level.”
Kansas State: “It is an honor to be recruited by a team that went so deep in the NCAA tournament. I like what I am hearing from them a lot.”
