Player Spotlight: Augustine Ominu
As time goes on and August draws nearer , the amount of available big man that are fully legit begins to shrink. College coaches have to search even harder to find a player that can possibly be effective on their level and then the question of if they will qualify academic wise comes into play as well. During the season we got to see Mount Zion Christian Academy and we were impressed with the amount of talent on their squad as well as the amount of players that could very play on the next level. One of those players was Forward/Center Augustine Ominu who we got our first opportunity to see during an early season tournament at Berean Baptist Academy.
His physique caught our attention almost immediately , he’s 6’8 with a very strong build that make it seem like he already has spent a high amount of time in the college weight room. We saw him snatch down rebounds at a very high rate , as well as blocking shots and making things difficult for defenders inside the paint. Offensively there were some moments that we saw some rawness but overall he did a solid job of handling business on the glass and playing the role that his team needed him to play.
Fast forward to the Fab 40 Camp in March at the same location, he came into this event as one of the true bigs and although he started off the day a bit slower he got things going at a very high level in the 2nd game. The third game is where we really got to see him do what he does best, in a game with two 16 minute halfs and a running clock he put together a 20 point, 10 rebound performance. During this time is where we really got the opportunity to see more of what he could do, he even showed his ability to step out and knock down a 3 point shot. Just an overall impressive performance on the day and one that helped him raise his stock , he is now hearing from Mississippi Valley State as well as various other D1 and D2 programs.
