SoCal Team Ratings: Sierra Canyon clinches top spot
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – The Sierra Canyon High Trailblazers, who play for the State Open championship Saturday night in Sacramento, have already been crowned Southern California’s No. 1 team – regardless of what happens Saturday – for the 2017-18 season.
Coach Andre Chevalier’s squad secured the top spot in the BurlisonOnBasketball “Top 15 Plus 15” ratings after knocking off Bishop Montgomery and Etiwanda last week in the respective Southern Regional Open semifinals and championship game.
Over the course of the season the Trailblazers were a collective 9-1 against the other 24 teams in the Top 10 Plus 15, with the only loss coming (by two points) to No. 3 Mater Dei in the Southern Section Open Division finale on March 2 at Long Beach State – where they also beat Etiwanda Saturday night for the regional crown.
Bishop Montgomery – when only two overtime losses to Sierra Canyon spoiling its otherwise spotless record – finished No. 2 in the ratings followed by Mater Dei (which was stunned by No. 9 and L.A. City Open runner-up Fairfax in the first round of state competition), Etiwanda and Southern Regional D-I champion Chino Hills.
Kenyon Martin Jr. (PICTURED), Scotty Pippen Jr. and Duane Washington Jr. combined for 51 of the team’s points in Sierra Canyon’s 58-55 win against Etiwanda in LBSU’s Pyramid Saturday night.
