LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – And the Southern Regional championship field is set . . .

Following the Tuesday semifinals, the finals will be contested Saturday in six divisions for the right to take trips to Sacramento to compete for state titles in those respective divisions – Open and I to V – next weekend.

The most noteworthy of those, naturally, are the Open and I showdowns, which will be held in the Pyramid on the Long Beach State campus Saturday.

St. John Bosco and Chino Hills – No.’s 5 and 6 in the BurlisonOnBasketball updated Top 10 Plus 15 SoCal ratings – tip off at 2 o’clock in D-I.

And, five hours later, the right to rep the South in the Open finale in Sacramento (March 24) will be decided in the showdown between No.’s 1 (Sierra Canyon) and 2 (Etiwanda).

There is no shortage of irony in that each was beaten in the CIF Southern Section Open playoffs by Mater Dei, Etiwanda in a Feb. 24 semifinal at Cal Baptist University (76-66) and Sierra Canyon in the March 2 championship game in the Pyramid (55-53).

Duane Washington Jr. (PICTURED) of Sierra Canyon proved to be quite the thorn in the proverbial side of the Bishop Montgomery squad – which lost only to the Trailblazers this season.

*His buzzer-beating 3 put his team’s Southern Section Open semifinal into its first OT; the Trailblazers eventually won after a second OT, 77-74, in that Feb. double-header at CBU.

And, Tuesday night at Calabasas High, Washington’s 3 in the final 30 seconds of the first overtime put his team in front to stay as it knocked off the Knights in overtime, 72-70.
