When the 24-2 Austin Packers play in tomorrow’s section 1AAA final against Northfield, they will have a very big fan in the stands.
Both Gach, last year’s leading scorer with 18.6 PPG, took off for Arizona Compass Prep in August. It was there that he averaged roughly 20 PPG on a new prep team, and although he is glad he went south, he wants to wish his old teammates (including his twin brother Duoth) the very best of luck as they chase a AAA title yet again. He told NHR today that he’ll be at the game on Friday.
“I want to wish good luck to the team and coaches,” Gach said, “and I hope they have a long run in March.”
The 6-foot-6 wing sees Arizona as a place where he could improve in both school and his chosen sport in preparation for the next level.
“Arizona is great,” he said. “It’s a different vibe for me as I focus more on school and basketball. The season went great, we played some really good teams this year and the competition was good.”
With offers from Southern Utah and North Dakota, Gach has four-year options on the table. Other D1 programs that have inquired include Utah, Gonzaga, LSU, Loyola Marymount, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Junior colleges are drooling at his length and skill, and that route may be appealing as he continues to bulk up his thin frame.
“For the offseason, I’m just looking to get better all-around and work on my body. As far a college, I’m still undecided. I have schools from high major to junior college calling me, and for me it’s just focusing on getting my grades and scores up right now.”
Both told us that he’s in the process of setting up campus visits with some schools.
