Recruiting Report: Chase Drew (2019)
Chase Drew knocked down three-pointer after three-pointer during a Team Thrill workout last week at the UA House in Baltimore. The 2019 wing had caught fire. At close to 6-foot-5, he has the size to shoot over top of most defenders, and doesn’t need much time to get it off. Drew, who just finished up his junior season at Gilman, will be asked to do more of the same once the live period begins.
“For someone that hasn’t seen my play a ton I’d say a way to describe my game is an athletic scorer from the perimeter. Finish above the rim in transition, but also be able to score from up to 25 feet out on the perimeter,” Drew explained. He has also learned how to use that lethal jump shot to help improve other aspects of his game. “The most improved part of my game in the last 12 months has definitely been my defense as well as taking guys off the dribble. Everyone knows I can shoot so adding a whole new arsenal to my game really helps me to keep defenders honest when matched up against me.”
Drew being 6-foot-5 gives him the ability to see over top of most defense, and he believes he doesn’t get enough credit for his passing skills. He mentioned that he is still working on being able to handle pressure in full court.
“I’m a big grab a rebound and push type of guard so me being able to kick the ball up ,and set my teammates up for easy transition buckets is a goal of mine to show coaches this summer on the circuit,” Drew stated. “I’m about 6’5-6’6 right now, and the way the game is evolving that’s the size of a lot of point guards now so me being to handle pressure in the full court and set up an offense in the half court is the next step in my game.”
Gilman is one of the top academic programs in the Baltimore area, and Drew said he has transitioned smoothly since his arrival from Dulaney. He says he scored an 1100 on his SAT, and carries close to a 3.3 GPA with a goal of 3.5 heading into his senior year.
“Grades are definitely a serious part of what I’m about as a student athlete,” Said Drew. “I’ve been offered by Siena.”
Drew says he is also being actively recruited by other division one programs. We expect that if he continues to shoot it well, and use that to expand other parts of his game, that he will continue to see his recruitment grow. What can he bring to a college program?
“What I think I can bring to a college program is a guy who hates to lose, works hard everyday on and off the court, and someone that is only focused on making the team better as well as myself. All the parts to my game come after that because if you don’t have the right mindset on and off the court your talent really means slim to none.”
Chase Drew is ranked by Prep Hoops as a top-75 prospect in his class. To view the full ranking of Maryland and DC’s class of 2019, click here.
