Prospect Update: Will Berg (2020)
When Will Berg suits up for the Valley Tigers next fall, he could be one of the more dominant junior posts in the state.
This spring and summer with the Iowa Barnstormers, though, the 6-foot-8 -combo-forward will hone his ability to score from the perimeter.
“Now that school ball is over, I’ve been working on my perimeter game. During school ball I was all in the post or high-post,” said Berg. “And now I’ll play high-post and perimeter.”
Berg finished the season as a dominant post with the Valley sophomore team. He started the season learning the ropes while suiting, and occasionally contributing, with the varsity.
When Valley’s junior wing Derek Emelifionwu became eligible at mid-season, Berg had to give up that varsity spot and finished the season exclusively with the sophomores.
“Varsity was a lot faster, it was good to get the chance to play against older guys, and it was good to sit back and watch all the juniors and seniors who had already been through it, and take in that stuff,” said Berg.
“Sophomores was a lot different. It was slower, playing against guys less skilled. I mostly double-doubled, and probably averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds.”
Now, he heads into what could be a breakout spring and summer with Coach Jamie Pettigrew and the Iowa Barnstormers’ 16U unit.
“I’m looking forward to playing in the adidas Gauntlet, it’s very high competition. I want to show-out in front of as many college coaches as I can and get known all across the country,” said Berg.
At 6’8 with an ability to play inside and out, you can expect some Division I schools to pay attention to him on the circuit this offseason.
“I’ve talked to the South Dakota coach, he came to some of our practices. And I’ve gotten some stuff in the mail from Nebraska,” said Berg.
“I’m hoping to get my first D1 offer this summer, and basically just get noticed.
