Prospect Spotlight: Wyatt Wegener (2020)
Algona’s versatile 6-foot-2 sophomore Wyatt Wegener made some huge strides this season, and the stats certainly reflect that.
As a freshman with the Bulldogs, Wegener played sparingly, averaging 1.3 points in four games. This season, as sophomore, he led the team, averaging 16.3 points per game.
“This year, my role changed a lot. I had to step in and fill some shoes and take way more shots. I averaged one point per game last year, and 16 this year,” said Wegener.
“Last summer, I realized I needed to work harder if I wanted to reach my goals. I was constantly in the gym working on my post-moves and shooting off-the-dribble.”
In addition to scoring in a variety of ways, Wegener led the team in assists, steals, blocks and rebounds.
“I can play anywhere on the floor, but I’d say I’m more of a small forward-type. My strength is just getting out and running and bringing up the tempo,” he said. “I’m best when I can catch and rip and drive to the hoop, and either get other people open, or make a shot.”
Although he’s never played grassroots in the past, Wegener says he’s looking for a team to play with this spring and summer. Anyone need a do-it-all wing?
“I want to (play AAU), I’m still looking at teams. There’s not many teams around here, it’s a long drive to get to any practices,” said Wegener.
“But, ya, I definitely want to play AAU ball.”
