Prospect Spotlight: 2019 Joshua Rhodes
SANTA MONICA, CA—Each and every season there are always a few late-bloomers and Joshua Rhodes is yet another example. The season ended on a sour note as the Vikings were dismantled by JW North (Riverside) 97-58 in the 1st round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
However, with the return of Rhodes, 6-foot junior Bryce Zephir, 6-foot-5 sophomore Quincy McGriff, and 6-foot-7 sophomore Ethan Berks, the future looks quite promising.
Rhodes is a 6-foot-8 junior who checks in at about 250 pounds and is quite the load to handle on the block. He has soft hands, long arms, and he knows how to carve out space while operating in the paint.
“I need to continue to expand my game in the paint,” Rhodes explained.
The Vikings are an up-tempo team and will probably continue to be that next year. Under coach James Hecht the Vikings are a transition-oriented team who puts pressure on opponents with their relentless tempo and length.
As Rhodes slides into the starting spot next season, conditioning and improving his strength will be critical. He does have good feet and instincts for this game, but improving his speed out in transition as well as becoming a more consistent finisher through contact will add to his recruiting profile.
During the spring evaluation period, Rhodes will have plenty of games to evolve his overall game and eventually his overall stock with college coaches.
