Who Joined the 50-40-90 Club in Indiana?
One of the toughest statistical feats to reach in basketball over the course of a season is the 50-40-90 mark; that’s going a whole season shooting 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from deep, and perhaps the toughest task of them all, connecting on 90 percent of your free throw attempts.
In order to be eligible for the feat, one must have made at least 45 shots from the floor, have at least 8 three-pointers made, and have 20 made free throws.
Last year, the state had four such players. Seniors Jack Davidson and Jacob Redding as well as sophomores Sam DeVault and Spencer Piercefield made the list.
This year there were just two players reach the club. One of the toughest statistical feats over the course of the season showcases the type of shooters that Indiana has but this year was different. A lot of players had the necessary shooting from the field, but lacked at the line. Without further ado, here are this year’s 50-40-90 club members.
Mekhi Lairy (Evansville Bosse) – 2018 5’8 PG – 196/312 FG, 80/166 3FG, 160/178 FT
The Miami (OH) commit plays with an edge and used his State Finals performance from the line to get his way onto this list. With his 7/7 from the line in the final, it gave Lairy all the necessary requirements to take the feat. Lairy possessed a line of 64/48/90 to etch his name into the books this year. Lairy was consistent all year long and shot the ball great inside the arc for his frame. He played great basketball all year en route to scoring 26.4 points a game.
Luke Brown (Blackford) – 2021 5’11 PG – 122/246 FG, 51/120 3FG, 122/132 FT
Brown was a much talked about freshman this year as he was the fourth leading scorer in the state at 27.8 points a game. Being the key cog for Blackford, Brown shot the ball at a 50/43/92 clip. Brown did all of this in his freshman year even though he got injured halfway through the year and was forced to miss the rest of the season. Brown played in isolation a ton this year which made the shooting percentages all that much more impressive. Look for him to repeat this next year.
