2017-18 Player of the Year
We made it! We’re in the final week of the 2017-18 Kentucky high school basketball season. The list of title contenders is down to the Sweet Sixteen and we will crown a new State Champion by Sunday afternoon. The time has come to vote who you believe is most worthy of being named Prep Hoops Kentucky’s Player of the Year. Here is the list of worthy candidates:
Dekeyvan “KyKy” Tandy, University Heights Academy – Only a Junior, Tandy has recently become a hot name across the Commonwealth. He has racked up several high major offers over the season and recently had Coach Calipari in attendance at the 2nd region championship game. Tandy puts up monster numbers for the Blazers, averaging nearly 31 points and 5 rebounds per game for the second region champions.
Dontaie Allen, Pendleton County – Another junior, Allen put up one of the most impressive statistical seasons in the state. Allen averaged just shy of 32 points and 12 rebounds for the season. Dontaie scored over 1,000 points in the season and crossed the 3,000 career point and 1,000 career rebounds thresholds. Allen is one of the more valuable players in the state and led Pendleton to a 24-8 record and a 38th district championship.
Mickey Pearson, John Hardin – The 6’8 Senior is a Mr. Basketball finalist and is signed to play his college ball at Saint Louis. Pearson finishes his career as the all time leading scorer and rebounder in John Hardin history. His senior year averages of 25.7 points and 11 rebounds per game are good enough for top 15 in the state in both categories.
Trevon Faulkner, Mercer County – Like his fellow Senior Mickey Pearson, Faulkner is a finalist for Mr Basketball. Signed to Northern Kentucky University, Trevon finished his senior season averaging 26.5 points and 9 rebounds per game. Trevon also eclipsed 3,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
Michael Moreno, Scott County – Mr. Consistency, Moreno is a double-double machine and the best player on the Cardinal team that has dominated all season long. Averaging 20.5 points and 11 rebounds per game, the 6’6 Junior is going to have a chance to finish his career as the best player in Scott County history by the time he graduates.
CJ Fredrick, Covington Catholic – Signed to play his college basketball at Iowa, the long shooter has put together an impressive senior year. CJ averaged 22.5 points per game with remarkable 58/48/83 shooting splits. Fredrick also chipped in 3 rebounds per game for a Covington Catholic squad that hasn’t lost a game in 10 weeks and will be one of the favorites to win the state at Rupp Arena this week.
