Top Standouts: Class 4A-District 4 Quarterfinals
Four Class 4A-District 4 quarterfinals were played on the campus of Calvary Christian on Tuesday.
Admiral Farragut and Tampa Prep advanced and will play one another in the semifinal on Friday. Also, Carrollwood Day and Cambridge Christian won and will meet up on Friday.
Here are the top standouts from 4A-4 district play.
Malcolm Whitlow (Carrollwood Day)
The Patriots have been led by junior Malcolm Whitlow all season long. The 6’1″ transfer from Nebraska had a day-high 28 points in the 83-40 victory over Northside Christian. Whitlow rarely misses whether he’s shooting from outside or going to the basket.
Daryl Mercer Jr. (Cambridge Christian)
No one was more clutch than Cambridge Christian senior guard Daryl Mercer Jr. The Lancers trailed for the entire second half until Mercer Jr. buried a buzzer beating 3-pointer to lift Cambridge to a 50-47 win (VIDEO HERE). He had a team-best 24 points.
Owen Mixon (Carrollwood Day)
It has been a steady season for 6’8″ big man Owen Mixon. The Carrollwood Day senior center dropped an easy 26 points against an undersized Northside Christian group. Mixon is a gamechanger when he can find success down low.
Jaren Phillips (Tampa Prep)
Jaren Phillips has been locked in over the last month while Tampa Prep has also been playing hard. The 6’5″ junior led his unit with 21 points in the 84-72 win over Calvary Christian. Phillips made life tough hard defensively and made really good decisions on the offensive end.
Austin Meloche/Josh Emerson (Calvary Christian)
Senior Austin Meloche threw together a team-high 25 points in the loss to Tampa Prep. A reliable scorer, Meloche topped the 1,000-point career mark. Also, junior guard Josh Emerson came off the bench to score 24 points for the Warriors including five 3’s in the first half alone.
Tyreek Montgomery (Admiral Farragut)
Standing at 6’1″, senior guard Tyreek Montgomery led the Blue Jackets with 18 points in the 61-46 win over Seffner Christian. He was cruising on the break all game and he made the most of his open looks. Montgomery is a reliable offensive weapon.
Dre Fuller (Admiral Farragut)
Admiral Farragut features McDonald’s All-American Dre Fuller. The 6’6″ senior had 16 points for the Blue Jackets. Fuller looks the part with his bounce and jumper but there is a lot of room to grow for the UCF commit.
Cornelius Bobo (Seffner Christian)
A young and scrappy group, Cornelius Bobo led Seffner Christian with 15 points in the loss to Admiral Farragut. The 6’1″ forward is a gifted shooter and he is bringing his game together.
Jaden Gray (Tampa Prep)
Tampa Prep has been in better control of games with Jaden Gray running the offense. The 6’1″ sophomore guard recorded 16 points for the Terrapins in the win over Calvary Christian. Gray is a steady riser in the 2020 class.
Tyler Harris (St. Pete Catholic)
A 5’10” speedy guard Tyler Harris had a team-best 17 points for St. Pete Catholic. He was the top weapon for St. Pete Catholic in the last second loss to Cambridge Christian. A junior, Harris returns next season as a solid ballhandler.
Zavion Campbell (Cambridge Christian)
A lengthy junior with an ideal athletic body, Zavion Campbell pitched in for Cambridge Christian with 17 points. The 6’5″ forward wins battles inside but his jumper is still a work in progress.
Edgar Ziegler (Carrollwood Day)
It was a slow start for Edgar Ziegler with six points in the first half, but the 6’3″ junior guard/forward tacked on 10 points in the second half to finish with 16. Ziegler finds his groove often and he works well off of his junior counterpart Whitlow.
Luke Vari (Northside Christian)
Senior guard Luke Vari led the Mustangs with 19 points. A 5’11” 2018 guard, Vari was the best thing going for Northside Christian in the loss to Carrollwood Day. He had some strong attacks near the rim.
