Recruiting Report: Wendell Matthews (2018)
Six-foot-6 frontcourt senior Wendell Matthews of Columbia Heights is scoring nearly 18 points a game for one of the better teams in the state.
“Things are going great for our team this year,” Wendell said. “We are connecting way faster than we thought we would do. We expect to go to state once again but take every game one by one because nothing is granted.”
The Hylanders are 14-2 on the season with wins over St. Croix Lutheran, Fridley, Brooklyn Center, Esko, Mahtomedi, BSM, and Lake City.
Matthews is a part of a senior core that has played together as much as anyone over the years and with each viewing the agile and explosive Matthews seems to be more skilled.
“I’ve been improving on my shot, and dribbling more,” Matthews said. “My individual goal is to make sure I’m doing my role for the team and hopefully what I do is helping the team.
“Our team goals is to win games and just improve throughout the season and hopefully win our sections and go to state.”
Matthews also mentioned that junior colleges are in contact with him and Wendell is certainly a division one junior college caliber player.
“Lake Region and Iowa Central are in contact, I’ve planned on going to Iowa Central for a visit in two weeks.”
