Recruiting Report: Kegan Owen (2018)
Kegan Owen
6’0” | PG | Greenwood Christian High School | Indiana Legends 2018
Kegan Owen transferred schools to Indianapolis Greenwood Christian High School for his senior season but it has not slowed him down one bit. They are looking to him to fill that senior leadership role and be the go-to-guy late in the game. He’s performed at a high level this year posting 18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Greenwood Christian is currently 11-7 on the season and have a tough matchup with #1 University tonight.
“As a team, we are really coming together and gelling. We have been playing some of our best basketball over the last couple weeks and we all love playing for Coach Marlin.” Owen sees the potential in this team even though it’s his first year with the group. “I think if we continue to develop as a team and improve, we have a shot to win the PAAC Conference and make a run this post season. It’s been a really fun year.”
Kegan has the ability to completely take over and dominate games on offense. He is a consistent shooter from deep and uses his strength and frame to get to the basket. His first step is deceptively quick and he’s worked on his creativity scoring against the back-line defense. Owen’s mid-range has become a reliable weapon for the senior point guard. His court vision is something that he’s always relied on to get others involved and to take some of the pressure off himself.
“Coach often defines my role as being a leader and being able to make plays for my teammates. I’m a big believer in leadership and communication, so it’s been fun helping my teammates grow as individual players and as a team this season.”
Kegan often has the ball in his hands during late game situations because he is a dynamic offensive weapon and makes things happen. “I’ve had a blast being put into the position I am in to make these kinds of plays for the team. I’m really thankful for that. I just love helping the team out in anyway I can and playing the game I love.”
With a tough matchup ahead tonight, Owen is aware of the team’s weaknesses and where they’ve needed to focus and improve. “I’d say our top areas are to continue buying into playing for each other and having a better understanding of our defensive principles and rotations. I think we have come a long way since the season has started and we have a lot of fun together.”
As Kegan has taken over as the leader and extension of the coach on the floor, his basketball IQ has continued to grow. He not only see’s areas for the team to improve but also where he can get better as a player and point guard.
“I think locking down on defense is going to be an important task for late in the year, especially with some of the guys we are set to go against that can really score the ball. Being able to improve on playing aggressively and smart without fouling.”
He understands his role on the offensive end of the floor and has taken on the title of a “defensive stopper”. He’s shown improvement in his foot speed and lateral movements that have allowed him to stop some outstanding scoring guards.
“I also think continuing to break down film and see more opportunities to make plays for the team is important. When making these plays, improving my decision making on when to shoot the pull up jump shot or getting all the way to the rim and free throw line.”
Kegan Owen has been offered positions at Trine University, Earlham College, and MacMurrary College (IL). He’s been in recent contact with Holy Cross College (IN), Cincinnati Christian University, Spring Arbor University, and Taylor University. He took a recent visit to Trine University and has interest in playing at Grace College, Goshen College, Olivet Nazarene University, and Ohio Christian Universt
“It’s not always about playing at the highest level I possibly can. I want to find a school and play for a program that is a good fit for me, the team, and the style of play.”
Keep a close watch on Kegan Owen for the remainder of the season as he looks to make Greenwood Christian the PAAC Conference Champions and find the right fit at the next level. One of the best remaining uncommitted 2018 guard prospects in Indiana.
