Recruiting Report: Alan Griffin (2018)
There has been a lot of talent that has moved out of the state of Illinois the last few years. One of those prospects is Alan Griffin. The 6’5” wing played his first two seasons at Oak Park River Forest in Chicago where he was projecting as one of the top 5 prospects in the 2018 class before he moved to New York where he is now at Archbishop Stepinac. PrepHoopsIllinois caught up with Griffin who is having a strong senior season and garnering a lot of interest at the high-major level!
He is averaging 18.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2 steals per game this year. Where has he seen the biggest growth in his game?
“My on ball defense and ball handling.”
Griffin says the school that is showing the most interest right now is his former in-state school Illinois.
“I text the assistant Orlando Antigua. They play hard defense and I feel if I went there with Ayo (Dosunmu) we could bring a lot on the offensive end.”
He visited Illinois last summer unofficially. Right now he doesn’t have an offer, but Griffin says he thinks they are close to extending one. What other schools are heavily involved?
“Xavier, St. John’s, Rutgers, and Seton Hall.”
Out of those programs St. John’s is the only one to offer so far. He spoke about the Big East program.
“They have a nice system. Chris Mullins lets his players play. They have a free offense and they like to get out and run. Their defense is getting there.”
What will be important in a school for Griffin?
“A school that’s serious about me I will be serious about them. I like schools that play a nice motion offense and likes to press and trap 94 feet. A school with a nice campus.”
According to one of our east coast sources Griffin has played up to his potential that we saw early in his career as a senior and is peaking at the right time. He played with The Rens on the Nike EYBL circuit last summer where he averaged 7.1 points while shooting 47% from the field. While he has a handful of mid-major and low-major offers on the table it looks like this is trending toward a late high-major sign.
