Prospect Spotlight: Eli Barry (2019)
Westminster’s 5-foot-11 point guard Eli Barry had himself a solid junior season, and is looking forward to a big spring and summer ahead.
A self-described “hustle guy,” Barry will not hesitate to get after a loose ball, play some tough defense or put in a little extra effort to snare a rebound.
And he says he’ll spend this offseason honing some offensive skills.
“Mainly when I go out and play, I don’t look to be the biggest scorer on the team. I just look to go out and lead the team and be a vocal leader. And my game revolves around my passion and hustle,” said Barry.
“I’m working on scoring, that’s going to be my biggest focus this offseason, is to get to the hoop and get my confidence going while going to the rack.”
Barry got plenty of minutes this past season, and even started for most of the season. He’s happy with how he played.
“I started a majority of the year, and we had a senior starter come back and start the last few games, but I was still getting starters minutes,” said Barry.
“I played well, I had multiple games with four or five steals and I had a bunch of assists.”
This offseason, he plans to play with FCI Warriors 17U. And he says he might get into contact with Team Forest as well.
As for recruitment, he uses former Division I head coach Lane Odom’s services as a part of sportmatchllc.com. Barry is hoping to get enough exposure this offseason to help his recruitment take off.
“He’s (Odom) in charge of keeping track of my recruiting stuff, so I haven’t really been talking one-on-one with any colleges. But, hopefully this summer, I’ll get to some camps and through AAU get some additional exposure” said Barry.
“I’m really hoping to get some coaches to come in contact with me, but it all depends how I play this summer.”
His recruitment goals have changed a bit over the past couple years. Now, he’s open to any and all opportunities.
“Initially, I just wanted an opportunity to walk-on to a D1 team, but I’ve realized that just being on a team and sitting on the bench is not what I’m looking for,” said Barry. “So, I’ll see if D2 or D3 teams start talking to me, and go visit them. And as of right now, I’m keeping all my options open.”
