Prospect Spotlight: Carter Oesterling (2019)
If Westminster junior Carter Oesterling has proved anything this winter, it’s that he’s one tough son of a gun.
The 6-foot-3 guard/forward hybrid has battled through mono, a sprained ankle and a battered eye to piece together a very nice season thus far for the Wildcats.
“I’ve been battling this season and I think I’ve been playing pretty well. I’m a team captain this year, so I’ve had to step up and lead a lot,” said Oesterling who is averaging 13 points and eight rebounds per game.
“Our offense is positionless basketball, so I’m guarding post players, but on offense I’m playing all over the place.”
Playing all over the place is Oesterling’s m.o., he would play point guard when he was a younger boy playing with his older brother. Then he got to be 6’3, and plays some guard, wing and post for the Wildcats.
“I can play the wing, but I can also handle the ball really well like I did growing up,” said Oesterling. “One of my coaches from last year said I’m one of those guys on the court that makes everyone better, just from having a high basketball IQ.”
His junior season is definitely his focus right now. But soon, Oestlering will head into his 17U offseason. A very important nt 17U offseason.
He says it’s likely that he’ll play with the Atlanta Timberwolves this spring and summer.
“I’ll play with bigger players on a bigger stage and I’ll play more of a guard on that team, which is what I’ll realistically play in college, being 6’3,” said Oesterling, who broke down his recruitment.
“I haven’t heard much from college coaches. I’ve been to plenty of exposure camps. By far the most productive camp I’ve been to was the All-Academic Southeast Camp. I have a 4.0 right now, and I got a 1410 on my SAT.”
A guy that holds academia in high regard, Oesterling says attending a school known for academics is a priority for him.
“I want to go to a high academic school, and a lot of high academic D3s were there at that (All-Academic) camp, so I got in contact with a few of them there,” said Oesterling.
There’s one Missouri school in particular that Oesterling has his sights set on.
“The school that I really want to go to is Washington University in St. Louis,” he said. “I went and watched their game against Emory and talked to their coach after the game. And I’m going to their summer camp this summer.”
