Player of the Week: Ben Obert (Week 8)
Ben Obert (2019)
6’3 G Coon Rapids-Bayard
Anyone who goes for 26 points, seven steals, six assists, six rebounds and three blocks in a single game is special player. We call it a quadruple-nickel: five or more of four different stat categorys. And Obert accomplished this last week in a win last Tuesday night over Paton-Churdan.
Currently Iowa’s 74th-ranked 2019, Obert is making a strong case to be bumped up a bit in the next installment of rankings. A closer look at the good-sized Coon-Rapids Bayard guard shows us that his monster week was certainly not out of the ordinary. Through 17 games this season, he’s averaging 21.6 points, 3.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. He’s one of the state’s most versatile threats. And he’s doing so while shooting 52 percent from the floor and 39 percent from deep.
Last fall, we caught up with the versatile playmaker, and he mentioned to Prep Hoops that Wartburg and Briar Cliff had been in on him early. This summer, he’ll again play with a talented group of 2019 Iowa Cornsharks, and could see that recruitment swell. In the meantime, he’ll try and lead his Crusaders (7-10) to a strong finish.
If Obert can post some more quadruple-doubles in February, then who knows, maybe some March basketball will be in the cards.
