Notable Performers: South Florida Guards
Samir Stewart, American Heritage
The senior guard has the shooting ability and beyond the arc acumen to take over a game. This much was evident last month, when Stewart went off for six treys.
Like legendary American Heritage guard Kobie Eubanks before him, Stewart has tremendous upper body strength. Though he’s 5-foot-10 and not 6-foot-5 like Eubanks (a Top 100 caliber prospect in his heyday), he’s relied upon for a significant amount American Heritage’s offensive output.
Trevor Ward, McArthur High
The true point guard has bought into the create-first mentality, doing a commendable job of understanding his teammates tendencies and really operating the offense. With a big 6-foot-7 target like Nicholas Choi down low and a sharpshooter in Jacob Narvaez playing off the ball, Ward has plenty of weapons and can engineer an effective high low game. If he can continue to keep an efficient assists to turnover ratio, his role will increase for a still evolving McArthur team with underrated personnel.
Torrin Andrews, Suncoast
The smooth 6-foot-1 junior guard has been a consistent double digit scorer with scoring capabilities at all three levels. While he’s adept as a scorer, Andrews has improved at displaying both scoring and dishing aspects.
While he’s shown an adeptness for quarterbacking the offense, keeping turnovers to a minimum would be a critical factor in mountaintops of the area’s elite point guards.
Sam Rolle IV, Suncoast
Evolving guard has developed into a reliable supplementary scorer. While he’s opened up his 3-point shot, he’s also improved with a quicker release and a knack for hitting shots amid tight closeouts and hand-in-your face pressure. Expect Rolle to continue in growth this season, as he’s emerging into a key defensive stalwart for Suncoast.
Ivan Reynolds, Coral Springs Charter
Crafty, high-motored left handed guard prospers with his ability to knife into the teeth of the defense and score. Also has a respectable pull up game and noted ability to score in traffic.
When he’s feeling it, Reynolds is one of the higher efficiency scorers you will find at this level. He’s the type of kid who can get hot in a hurry, putting together a 7-for-9 or 8-for-10 clip during a half. Spurt-ability is perhaps his best attribute.
Justin Allen, Coral Springs Charter
A hard driving and oft-attacking finisher, Allen is a stealth attacker for CSC. If you forget about him or his involvement in Coral Springs’ half-court or transition offense, he can pop out of nowhere and turn in a traditional 3-point play or fly in for a stickback.
