I had a coach tell me earlier this year he doesn’t care about the rankings and blah, blah, blah. Well to that coach I say good because you are not ranked.
I have seen Archbishop Hoban, just once and was impressed, but believe the teams I have ranked ahead of them are indeed better. I have yet to see Stow so until them they get mentioned in the best of the rest.
Here we go:
6. Brush (13-5) — The Arcs suffered a setback in an embarrassing loss to Riverside. But they have some impressive wins including ones over Garfield and Cornerstone. Have an outstanding point guard in DJ Dial (2019), a great young big in John Hugley IV (2020) and a do-it-all guy in Andre Harris (2019). They play at St. Edward on Feb. 9 and host Beachwood on Saturday.
7. Cornerstone Christian (9-7) — They can beat anyone if high-scoring Michael Bothwell (2018) is on fire. He scored 38 this year in a win over Garfield Heights.
8. St Vincent–St. Mary (9-7) — I’m very impressed with the defense of the Irish. Their press can be suffocating and they have a lot of different weapons on offense, including freshman Seth Wilson (2021) who is averaging around 13 a game and shooting 41 percent from 3. Hopefully, they’ll prove me right on this ranking and beat Archbishop Hoban on Feb. 6 at Hoban.
9. Lorain (13-3) — The Titans 1-2 punch of 6’1” guard Devon Grant (2019) and Taevon Pierre-Louis (2019) is amongst the best in the state. Too bad they don’t play two-on-two.
10. Brunswick (15-2) — That record is gaudy and they beat Shaker last week, which was really impressive. Plus, I just watched video on Hudl of Kyle Goessler (2019) draining 4 triples in recent win over Strongsville. They play Solon tonight at home and then host Mentor on Friday. One coach who has competed against them said they are highly underrated and way more athletic than they are given credit for.
Best of the rest: Benedictine (12-4); Archbishop Hoban (14-2), Stow (14-2). St.Ignatius (10-5).
