McCallie Dr. Pepper Classic Three-Point Contest
Betwixt the two Saturday games of the Dr. Pepper Classic was an enjoyable three-point contest.
Participants included three players from each team: Hamilton Heights Christian Academy (Jordan Rawls, Tre Edwards, Yannick Le Guenne), McCallie (Jay Gibson, Mac Hunt, Trip Butler), Oak Hill (B.J. Mack, Will Richardson, Evan Johnson) and Ensworth (Jaylan Clemmons, Dominic Wynn, Chaz Lanier).
The first round featured sterling performances by Jaylan Clemmons, who set the tone with 11 points. Several opponents scored 8-9 points out of a possible 18 points (3 racks of 5 balls-1 Moneyball).
Trip Butler lit up the scoreboard with 13 points. As the top two players advanced, Yannick LeGuenne (HHCA) needed 11+. He finished off 12 points as a replacement for Wheza Panzo.
Mac Hunt earned his way into the finals with 12 points.
FINALS: Trip Butler, Yannick Le Guenne, Mac Hunt.
The final three players reset their scores and competed in a final run-through of 45 seconds each.
First, LeGuenne rattled off 11 points. Mac Hunt struggled to a tally of six points.
With his teammates courtside looking on and cheering, Trip Butler did well with the first two racks scoring 10 points. He needed just one in the final rack and the contest looked to be in the bag.
He missed his first three of the final rack. Nerves tightened. Cheers paused so briefly. Then, Trip hit a single shot and the moneyball to clench the crown.
With a final score of 13 points, McCallie’s senior guard Trip won.
