Ghiden and Porcil Win Co-MVP for their Conference
The 2017-2018 season will be known as the last season ever for the Solano County Athletic Conference and it has had its memorable moments. Vanden High School was able to become the first team to go undefeated in the conference by going 10-0, and Seniors Malik Ghiden of American Canyon High School and Aaron Porcil of Vanden High School, were able to become the first C0-MVPs in the conference. Ghiden and Porcil played well all season while leading their teams into the playoffs. Porcil was the leader during Vanden’s 10-0 run, while Ghiden led American Canyon to their best conference record in the school’s history by finishing 7-3. Ghiden also broke the school’s single game scoring record by putting 35 points against Benicia High School.
Finishing out the 1st team all-league team was Benicia’s Kade Lockrem and Lafayle Fuller, Vanden’s Teiano Hardee and Jhaylon Martinez, Vallejo’s Anthony Thomas, and Fairfield’s Shakir Howard. Vanden, Benicia, and American Canyon will represent the league in the postseason starting this Wednesday. Porcil will be looking to make another deep playoff run after finishing one game away from the state championship a year ago. For Ghiden, he will be looking to bring American Canyon their first postseason win in the school’s history while playing in the school’s first ever home playoff game.
The 2017-2018 season for the Solano County Athletic Conference was one to remember not just because it was the last season for the conference, but also because of the many records that were broken. The league will not exist next season due to teams entering new leagues and sections, but most teams will still schedule each other during the pre-season of next year to keep the rivalries going.
